The Smallpeice Trust is an educational charity which promotes engineering, design and technology to young people. This year, the Smallpeice Trust will reach out to over 16,000 young people through residential courses and in-school Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) Days.
Residential Courses Based at the country’s leading universities and other secure venues these 4-day courses provide Year 9-12 students with the opportunity to find out more about engineering. From Marine Technology to Low Carbon Energy Challenge, these courses all offer young people the opportunity to change theory into reality whilst connecting with industry professionals and technical specialists.
In-school STEM Days STEM days are for students in Years 6-11 and are especially popular in Year 8 and 9. Groups of 50 students work together in small teams on ‘design and make’ projects to improve their creative thinking and problem-solving skills. The activities are varied and range from designing, testing, and refining motorcars powered by super-capacitors to propelled gliders, wind turbines, and bridges.
Becoming a Smallpeice Supervisor on residential courses The Smallpeice Trust is always on the lookout for enthusiastic teachers to become residential supervisors to support students on the course. The work is particularly suited to those with some knowledge of education, design technology or engineering. Main duties include working with a team of students throughout the course, supporting learning, monitoring progress, and encouraging full participation.
Benefits £240 worth of gift vouchers to use in high street stores Full board accommodation at the course venue provided and travel expenses reimbursed Expand your CV with experience of working with young people in an extra-curricular setting, residential supervision and working with adults and students from a range of backgrounds Network with professionals and academics

Read on, read on….Opportunity for involvement in Royal Aeronautical Society and Boeing: They are looking for two schools to build a Kit Aeroplane and fly students in it. We have been asked to propose schools from East Riding, North East Lincs, North Lincs and Hull for this activity. If you would like to be proposed please let me know by return. (As far as where the Royal Aeronautical Soc and Light Aircraft Assoc operate in our area, I’m not sure – you may well know through parent networks??) Summary of project: Yateley School in North Hampshire won a competition sponsored by Boeing last year to build a plane, which should be completed by this year’s Farnborough Air Show at the end of July, when the students will be taken for a flight in the light aircraft they built. How thrilling is that! The organisers are now looking for schools to apply for the opportunity to participate next year. There will be two kits available, and the schools need to be in an area with active branches of both the Royal Aeronautical Society and the Light Aircraft Association, as these guys provide the bulk of the support for the plane build. The schools need to apply during this coming term because the organisers would like visit between ten and twenty of them over the summer term, in order to be able to announce the successful applicants at Farnborough Air Show in July. Eco Challenge 2010 Hello all of you who are joining in our Eco Growing Challenge. The plugs you will receive will all have been started like this Just to let you know that although your plants won’t arrive until April I have started some seeds on my windowsill in the house. When you sow your seeds you will know what to do. You can watch them grow. I have made some paper pots with my paper pot maker to get started. I have also recycled some seed trays from plants I bought last year from the garden centre. I made my plant labels from a polythene milk container which I cut into strips and have written on them with a marker pen. Can you think of anything else you could recycle for your plant labels? My pictures show the dates the seeds were planted and their progress every couple of days. I have planted radishes, tomatoes, cucumbers, lobelia, busy lizzie and petunia I planted the seeds on 31 January, some of them have germinated and grown quite big. The petunias and the busy lizzy have not come up yet.

Personal Finance Education LMI Event 5 March 2010 Maddie Boyers (age 13) visited a number of NELincs schools last term to talk to students about her book and being an author. I’ve attached a copy of her promotional poster. She is available towards the end of the summer term once again. Her talk is not only interesting but can be used to demonstrate how she used all the inc enterprise competencies whilst writing and promoting her book. If you would like to have Maddie give a talk at your school please get in touch with me asap. She will soon be offering her services wider than NEL and I suspect her limited time will be swallowed up quite quickly. The inc project will give 3 free copies of her book to each school that she visits in NEL although additional copies can be bought direct from her. We have had excellent feedback from the schools she has visited so far. This is most suitable for years 6 and 7. LMI (Labour Market Information) Newsletter for Students Issue 4 December 2009
